In reality, he won an award for writing, but that award was for the fantasy category of the parody Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest.Michigan is where Dan and his family make their home.

The Edward Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest is won by writing the "best" worst opening sentence of a novel.
